An
emergency dentist in Mississauga covers a wide range of dental issues that cause severe pain or have the potential of causing even greater problems if left untreated. If you crack a tooth, get into an accident that results in a lost tooth or damaged gums or any number of problems, then an emergency dentist can provide the immediate care and treatment you need.
In some situations, they may be required to carry out significant dental treatment, including tooth removal where necessary. However, it should be remembered that modern dentistry considers removal as the last resort, so if they can provide alternative treatment they will.
There are a few situations where a tooth needs to be removed, including:
Extensive Damage
If a tooth is damaged beyond repair, it may need to be removed to prevent it causing infection in the gum later. That damage can be caused by poor maintenance, accident or trauma or a number of reasons, but if the risk of further deterioration of oral health is there, then your emergency dentist can and will perform a dental extraction for you.
Gum Problems
Gum problems can mean a tooth extraction is required to deal with the infection or other problem. Again, failing to do so can allow a small issue to spread and threaten overall dental health, requiring the need for more invasive surgery and even the loss of more teeth.
Tooth Removal
A tooth extraction can be a challenging procedure, depending on the reasons behind the removal. For damaged or broken teeth, removing the remaining portion can present difficulties, but in other cases it may not be difficult at all.
In most cases though, you will need anesthesia for a tooth removal. There are two options here, local or general anesthetic. A local anesthetic numbs the specific area of the procedure, so in this case that would be the gum area around the tooth to be extracted. Here, you remain conscious during the extraction, although you will not feel any pain.
A general anesthetic renders you unconscious for the entire process. You will be completely unaware of the extraction at all, which can be useful for more difficult procedures. Which is right for you will depend on both the extraction itself and your comfort. An emergency dentist office will have staff licensed for the application of both anesthetics and will advise you on which is most suitable for your treatment.
After Care
Finally, one important thing that an emergency dentist will offer advice on is after care. An antibacterial mouthwash is usually recommended, and in some cases, painkillers may be required for a day or two as well.
If you have had anesthetic, you will probably need someone with you to help you get home, even a local anesthetic can leave you feeling distracted, which can be dangerous when driving.
